I am fortunate enough to work at a job that allows me to wear headphones while working. I enjoy using this time to listen to podcasts and have found a few writing-related ones. So I figured I would share some of my favorites!
This podcast is hosted by Brandon Sanderson, Mary Robinette Kowal, Howard Tayler and Daniel Wells. Each episode is fifteen minutes long and covers a wide range of topics. For 2017 the podcast’s theme was story length. They covered everything from how to determine a stories length, to structuring a full novel.
They also host guest authors including V.E. Schwab, Darren Shan, and Robin Hobb. My favorite part of these podcasts however are the homework assignments at the end of every episode. They are related to whatever the episode was about that week, and helps you to put the concept into practice.
This podcast never fails to make me laugh, and I love the way that the hosts interact with one another.
The Creative Penn
The Creative Penn is a podcast created by Self-published author Joanna Penn. She covers everything from the craft of writing to time management and writing as a business.
Joanna is such a kind and warm-hearted person and I love listening to her interviews. There is something here for everyone here. Whether you want to learn something about writing specific, or looking for tips on how to market your book.
This is more like a mini-course hosted by the same guys to do The Self-Publishing Podcast, Johnny B. Truant, David Wright, and Sean Platt. This series focuses on writing better stories faster. They cover everything you need to know to write an amazing novel in a short period of time.
This was an interesting series that had a lot of good tips for pre-writing your novel.
I do not think this podcast is still running since the creator Britney Mills has not updated since February 2016. I still think the backlog of episodes is worth checking out though. The episodes are short, only averaging about 10 minutes each. This podcast focuses more on motivation than the actual craft of writing. I especially love the quote episodes that she does every so often. She will take a quote about writing and analyze it for the listener. It is a good pick me up for anyone who may be having issues finding the motivation to write.
The Witching Hour Podcast
So this is not actually a writing podcast. They do discuss writing techniques, however, so I am putting it on this list anyway. The witching hour focuses on the genre of horror and takes a look at everything from cryptids and legends, to movies and TV shows. The look at the stories and discuss what makes them good stories and is definitely a must listen for anyone who is writing in the horror genre.
What are some of your guy’s favorite writing podcasts? I have pretty much marathoned all the ones I have, so I could definitely use some suggestions!
